LYON CONTINUES TO ASSERT ITS EUROPEAN AMBITIONS THROUGH MAJOR URBAN DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS WHICH WILL FURTHER CONTRIBUTE TO THE ATTRACTIVENESS OF THE METROPOLITAN AREA IN THE YEARS AHEAD.

  • Carré de Soie: 400,000 sq. m. net floor area, over 60,000 sq. m. of retail and leisure activity space, including a cinema complex.

  • Oxygène Tower: 120 meters high, 26,000 sq. m. of office space and 10,000 sq. m. of retail space.

  • Future stadium of the OL soccer team: 60,000 seats, investment of €350 million.

  • Rhone river embankment (inaugurated in 2007): €44 million invested. A public park on a 6 km stretch in the heart of the city.

  • Confluence: the largest urban development project in Europe, a new city center district of 150 hectares (330 acres) which doubles the size of downtown Lyon, an investment of €1 billion. Completion of the first phase in 2009 (Marina, Place des Archives).

  • Confluences Museum: a museum of sciences and societies, 46,500 sq. m. surface area, 500,000 visitors expected annually. Completion planned for 2009.

The Lyon Convention Center is designed for a city in harmony with its international vocation, which the historian Fernand Braudel said was the only way for Lyon to achieve its true greatness. The convention center, the biggest and no doubt most complex in Europe, was designed as an urban site integrated into the natural setting of the nearby park and the river, a short distance from the historic city center. This is a genuinely European and humanist conception...
